Skilled Visa – Migrate to Australia with Your Skills
Australia’s Skilled Migration Program offers a range of permanent visa options for individuals with qualifications and work experience in occupations that are in demand across the country. This program is designed to address skill shortages in Australia by attracting qualified professionals from around the world.
If you are a skilled worker or a recent graduate from an Australian institution, you may be eligible to apply for a Skilled Visa, which can lead to permanent residency and a future in Australia.
Skilled Migration Visas
1. Skilled Nominated Visa – Subclass 190
This visa lets nominated skilled workers live and work in Australia as permanent residents.
Must have an occupation listed on the Skilled List
Have a suitable Skill Assessment for the occupation
You must have been nominated for this visa by an Australian state or territory government agency.
Requires a minimum of 65 points
You must receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) through SkillSelect
You must be aged under 45 when you are invited to apply for the visa
You must have atleast Competent English
No employer sponsorship needed
2. Skilled Independent Visa – Subclass 189
Point Tested stream: eligible for skilled workers who meet the required points and other requirements
No sponsorship required
Suitable for skilled individuals with occupations on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)
Requires a minimum of 65 points
Must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect
New Zealand Stream: eligible for New Zealand citizens
Hong Kong Stream: eligible for Hong Kong or British National (Overseas) passport holders
3. Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491)
Requires state or family sponsorship in regional areas
Valid for up to 5 years
Offers a pathway to permanent residency through the Subclass 191 visa
Applicants must live, work, and study in a designated regional area
General Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for any skilled visa subclass, you must:
Be under 45 years of age
Have an occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list (MLTSSL, STSOL or ROL)
Obtain a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority
Meet minimum points requirement (usually 65)
Demonstrate competent English (e.g. IELTS 6.0 or equivalent)
Meet health and character requirements
Submit an EOI via SkillSelect and receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA)
